How to Learn the Italian Vocabulary

Like French, Spanish and Portuguese, Italian is one of many Romance-derived languages and has similarities to the French, Spanish and Portuguese vocabularies. Whether you're traveling to Italy soon or if you're trying to teach yourself Italian for personal reasons, it is important to have a basic knowledge of well-known Italian vocabulary words so you can understand any Italian titles that you come across in magazines, Italian restaurants and Italian-language broadcast media.

Instructions

Purchase both an Italian language dictionary and travel phrasebook about Italy. Then write down certain words you're interested in finding out the Italian translations of, and seek out these words in the dictionary. Then rewrite certain Italian phrases you see in the travel phrasebook and replace certain words with the words you just learned while reading the dictionary.

Meet with an Italian-language tutor at a local university. Tell him or her which categories of the Italian vocabulary you're interested in learning and arrange to attend a few sessions with the tutor once a week regarding your lessons. For example, if you want to learn about which Italian words and phrases are to be used when conducting business in Italy, tell the tutor you're interested in learning business-related Italian vocabulary.

Purchase educational language DVDs. Visit the "Rosetta Stone" website and purchase the Italian-language instructional DVD set. Also ask your tutor or Italian professor for suggestions on what they think would be the best DVDs to help you learn the Italian vocabulary.
