Buy or borrow a book that introduces you to the language you want to learn. Keep a journal next to you to take notes and practice conjugating verbs. Write and say out loud to yourself some basic introductory conversational phrases, such as saying your name, asking how someone is doing and explaining how you are feeling. Write down these conversations and conversational phrases to help you remember.
Examine the present tense conjugations of basic verbs, such as "to be" and "to have." Commit to memory the regular present tense verb endings and irregular endings. Memorize those and the other present tense conjugations. Write down the vocabulary words presented in your book, and any words you don't recognize or are hard to remember.
Move on to the simple past tense. Read children's books in the language you are learning and look up any words you don't know in your dictionary. Make notes in the margins of your book and reread paragraphs or sentences that are hard to understand. Use a phrase book for idioms and expressions. Keep a journal about what you read and what you learn, aside from just vocabulary. Use vocabulary flash cards with pictures instead of word translations.
Investigate other tenses in the order that you come across them. Develop your diary about what you learn and expand your log of vocabulary. Watch youtube and Internet videos and listen to online radio in the foreign language to increase listening.
