How to Learn Four Languages

If you are including English in your four-language project, you would be "quadrillingual." If you are going for five, congratulations, as that will make you a "polyglot." Chinese is the most spoken language in the world; English is the second most spoken language, because it is the "linga franca" of business, aviation and technology. Spanish takes third place, followed by Arabic, Bengali and Russian. If, however, your motivation for learning four languages is anthropologically based, consider studying Ter Sami, with only two speakers, or Ume Sami, with 10 speakers.

Instructions

    • 1

Be strategic. Identify the four languages you want to learn and decide which one you will study first. The more languages you know, the easier it is to learn the next. Spanish, for example, is much easier than Chinese because what-you-see-is-what-you-say, so it is a good first choice.

    • 2

Study one language at a time. If you try to learn, for instance, Italian, French and Spanish all at once you will become totally confused because so many of the words are similar.

    • 3

Pick your level. If you are going for native-speaker status it will take you longer to learn four languages, than if you just want to be able to carry on a basic conversation.

    • 4

Develop a time-line for your projected language acquisition. Be realistic. You may be able to learn to speak Spanish reasonably well in a few months, but it is going to take you longer to master Arabic.

    • 5

Determine your methodology. Total immersion is the best way to learn four languages, but if that is not an option, you can enroll in classes at a community college or local university. With the Internet, learning four languages can be a do-it-yourself project.

    • 6

Choose the right materials and set up a study schedule. If the materials do not appeal to you, it will be difficult to stick to the program. Spend some time reviewing offerings and ask people who teach the language for suggestions.

    • 7

Find interactive language programs on the Internet. With technology, learning a language does not have to mean sitting at a desk and studying grammar rules.

    • 8

Interact with the four languages as you learn them. Watch movies and television in the language you are studying.

    • 9

Try to spend time with native speakers. Ring the Malaysian culture center or check out Russian cultural programs.
