Instrumental Music Schools

As the name implies, instrumental music involves playing instruments such as the violin or trumpet. Instrumental music schools offer training for students interested in playing or learning about instruments. Schools that offer instrumental music programs can be found all across the country; some of these schools are designed to offer degree programs in fields related to instrumental music, while others simply offer training or some level of certification in the field.

    • There are hundreds of institutions in America that feature instrumental music training programs. Many of this country's large universities contain music-related colleges or schools. The University of Tulsa features the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences. This college's School of Music offers training in several fields of instrumental music. Lee University's School of Music features a Department of Instrumental Music. Alabama State University's College of Visual and Performing Arts features a department of music that offers instrumental music training programs. The Julliard School is a relatively small institution; however, its music division offers some of the most competitive instrumental music programs in the country.

    Accreditations

    • Some instrumental music schools are accredited institutions. Through regular peer evaluation, the practice of accreditation ensures that an institution's programs are quality programs that uphold certain educational standards in the field. The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) is an American accreditation agency that is designed to ensure that an institution's music-related programs meet national educational standards. The University of Tulsa, Lee University, Alabama State University and Julliard School all offer instrumental music programs that are accredited by NASM.

    Degree Programs

    • Instrumental music schools can provide training programs geared toward attaining a degree in instrumental music. The University of Tulsa offers several degree options including a bachelor of music education in Instrumental Music and a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance. At Lee University, undergraduate students can enroll in programs that lead to such degrees as the Bachelor's in Instrumental Music and the Bachelor's in Instrumental Church Music. A Bachelor's of Music as well as a Bachelor's in Music Education are available at Alabama State University. This institution also offers a Master of Education in Music Education. Julliard School offers a bachelor of music degree with a concentration on such instruments as the harpsichord and guitar. A master of music degree is also available in several instrumental music fields.

    Activities

    • Many of this country's instrumental music schools offer their students a multitude of activities and ensembles to participate in. At the University of Tulsa, instrumental music students can participate in activities including concert instrumental ensembles and jazz ensemble. Auditions are required for students to participate in the University of Tulsa's orchestra. Lee University also offers extracurricular programs such as jazz ensemble and symphony orchestra. Alabama State University offers programs such as woodwind ensemble, jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble and brass ensemble for its instrumental music students. At Julliard qualified students can participate in the Chamber Orchestra, New Julliard Ensemble and the Julliard Jazz Ensemble.
