How to Save Public Libraries

Many public libraries across the country are facing severe budget cuts at the same time as the need for their services is growing. The America Library Association reports that access to free lnternet and job hunting tools are just two of the reasons library visits are on the rise. Saving libraries from budget cuts will require that the public pulls together to demonstrate the need and show support for keeping the doors open.

      Compile a list of public libraries that are endangered by budget cuts and the vital services that would be lost to the community if these libraries closed or restricted hours.

      Establish an organization to support public libraries -- or become a member of a larger group. Recruit members from the local community and begin attending political meetings at the local, state and national levels. Let candidates for public office know they they will lose your vote if they do not support public libraries.

      Begin raising money to produce political advertising. Build a mailing list of your members and educate them about candidates' views on funding for public libraries.
