How to Identify the Meanings of Words

One of the world's first dictionaries was published in 1582. Fast forward to modern times. Established online in 2000, the Oxford English Dictionary adds 1800 new and revised words every 3 months.It was written by Richard Mulcaster, and contained 8000 words. Today, finding the meaning, or definition, of a word is a simple task. Anyone who has access to the Internet or a dictionary can look up the meaning of any word.

  Open up a browser, such as Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer.

  In the browser's search bar, type in the word "dictionary."

  Select from one of the top several search engine results. Results will include www.dictionary.com, and similar websites.

  Type the word into the website's search engine.

  Read the meaning of the word.
