How to Learn Arabic Without a Teacher for Free

Arabic, a language spoken by 300 million people worldwide, has many benefits. Learning Arabic will help you at home and abroad, because you can talk to people in the Middle East and at your local Middle East grocery. There are many free ways to study Arabic without a teacher at home, abroad, or in your community. Studying Arabic without a teacher will require more dedication and concentration from the student, especially at the beginning since the written script is so different from English. With the right mindset and instructions, however, anyone can learn Arabic on their own with no cost.

Search your local public library or a university library if you have access to one for Arabic learning books or audio tapes. Many university libraries will offer free online access to Rosetta Stone, a comprehensive language learning software program with audio elements, and Pimsleur, an audio-only foreign-language program for students, staff, faculty or friends of the university.

Look in your local library for Arabic learning books. "Al-Kitab" is the textbook that many schools and universities in the United States and UK use to teach Arabic. Go through the book, lesson by lesson. Test yourself throughout and review past vocabulary.

    • 3

Visit the websites of international organizations, such as the Foreign Service Institute and the BBC websites that offer free, interactive Arabic audio lessons. The BBC's lessons are quick introductions to Arabic, while the Foreign Service offers in-depth Arabic audio lessons.

    • 4

Listen to news or television programs in Arabic to be immersed in the language. Arabic news channels like Al-Jazeera can be accessed through online video streaming.

Apply for language grants to study Arabic abroad for free. The federal government is a great source for language grants. It offers the FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) or Boren Scholarships, two scholarships that cover all expenses of studying and travelling abroad. Students who win these scholarships have the opportunity to learn the language through immersion, instead of from a teacher.
