How Do I Put Accent Marks Over the Letters if the Keyboard Is Bilingual?

Accent marks are not part of the English language. Because of this, keyboards sold for use in the United States do not include letters with accent marks. However, keyboards can type accent marks, which makes them bilingual keyboards if you know the right keys to press. Once you can put accent marks over your letters, then typing words in French, Spanish or other languages will be much easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the beginning of the word, but stop before you reach the letter that needs an accent mark.

    • 2

Press the "Ctrl" key on your keyboard if you're a Windows user. Press the "Option" key if you're a Mac user.

    • 3

Continue holding "Ctrl" or "Option" key. For Windows, press the key with a single apostrophe: the ' key. For Mac, press the "e" key.

    • 5

Use a resource, such as Penn State's Spanish Language Center, to find out how to type other Spanish accents. For example, for an "ñ" in Windows, hold down "~", and the "n" key.
