How to Cure Static Electricity

Everything is made of atoms, which are made of positive and negative charges; there are an even number of positive and negative charges in everything, and they cancel each other out. However, when objects come into contact they sometimes take positive or negative charges from each other. When the item comes into contact with a metal object a static shock is created. People often get a static shock after walking across carpet and touching a doorknob or other metal item. Static electricity can destroy computer hard drives and other sensitive electronics.

Instructions

    • 1

Touch a metal object to eliminate any static charge you already have before touching sensitive electronics. Any charge in your body will escape in a static shock.

    • 2

Maintain a humidity level of 40 to 50 percent indoors to prevent static electricity by using a cold- or warm-air humidifier.

    • 3

Wear clothing made of cotton or other natural fibers to prevent creating a static charge. Natural fibers create less static than synthetic fibers such as polyester.

    • 4

Wear shoes made of leather instead of rubber shoes in order to prevent building up a static charge. Leather shoes create less static.

    • 5

Dry your clothing using fabric softener sheets. These sheets prevent static build up in the dryer.

    • 6

Rub fabric softener sheets on furniture to remove static build up.

    • 7

Buy a balanced polarity ionizer-fan. These fans balance the charge in the air to prevent static shocks.
