How to Choose Online Paralegal Courses

A paralegal works in a lawyer's office or in the legal department of a corporation, where she assists in preparing legal documents. If you want to take a paralegal course online, accredited paralegal courses are available from reputable schools. However, if you want a course that has been approved by the American Bar Association — and some employers require their paralegals to have graduated from ABA-approved programs — you'll have to choose a hybrid or traditional program.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the website of the school that you're considering to make sure that it is accredited. Look for accreditation information under the "Accreditation," "FAQs" or "About" tabs on the school's website. You may also conduct a site search using the word "accreditation." Alternatively, go to the U.S. Department of Education's website (see Resources) and search for the school in the DOE's database of accredited post-secondary institutions.

    • 2

Visit the ABA's website (see resources) to search its directory of ABA-approved paralegal education programs. ABA-approved paralegal education programs are broken down by state; click on your state to see the list of programs. Note that not all the programs listed will be available with an online component.

    • 3

Verify that the school you're researching offers the level of courses you want. You can earn a paralegal certificate, an Associate's degree in paralegal studies or a bachelor of science degree in paralegal studies.

    • 4

Ask potential employers about their educational preferences for paralegals. According to the BLS, most paralegals have earned either an associate's degree in paralegal studies or a bachelor's degree in another subject plus a certificate in paralegal studies.
