Medical technologist must exhibit an interest in analytical thinking and the ability to pay attention to detail. According to the AMT, accuracy is important as a medical technologist. If a change goes unnoticed during specimen analysis, misdiagnosis could occur. Also, those who have an interest in chemistry or microbiology might find this field interesting. In essence, med techs play an important role in the diagnosis of patients.
Generally, medical technologists perform their jobs in a somewhat hazardous environment as some samples might emit fumes. Because they work around body fluids and tissue samples, med techs often wear gloves, medical goggles and laboratory coats. Just like other professions in the medical field, med techs work varied shifts. This is especially true of hospital med techs. Because patients enter the hospital at various times, medical personnel request lab work 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
To perform the duties of a medical technologist, an individual must earn a bachelor's degree in medical technology or a life science, such as chemistry or biology. The program usually includes coursework in statistics, chemistry, biology, math, computer science and business. In addition, students usually take part in a one-year internship based in a hospital setting. There are approximately 470 accredited medical technology programs recognized by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
Some states, including California, require medical technologist to earn a license to work in the field. Check with the state board for requirements. Certification adds value to the med techs qualifications. The AMT contends individuals with certifications in the medical technology field tend to earn more and advancement chances increase. Associations that offer certification include the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the AMT and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.
The Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) of 1998 placed greater stipulations on the medical technology field. A 1987 "Wall Street Journal" article exposed a New York lab for botched readings of Pap smear samples that led to several cervical cancer deaths. The act requires degree requirements, certifications and periodical tests on individuals who perform complex laboratory tests. In January 2009, the Centers for Disease Control and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requested an amendment to CLIA to mandate that individuals who screen Pap tests demonstrate their proficiency in reading and interpreting tests.
