Free Spanish Learning Games

Learning a foreign language can be fun. Games can help students acquire new vocabulary and practice proper pronunciation while learning grammar rules. While there are some language-based games available in stores, many games can be played for free using your imagination.
  1. Yo Veo (I Spy)

    • In a classroom or in a living room full of objects one person picks an object. He says in Spanish, "Yo veo algo verde," or "I see (spy) something green." The other players ask questions in Spanish trying to identify the object the player has in mind. The player may give another clue, "Yo veo algo grande," or "I see something big." Clues continue until someone guesses correctly the object being described in Spanish.

This Spanish-language version of a popular kids' game helps is great for beginning levels of language development. You will learn and practice using adjectives and interrogatives.

    Cadena (Chain)

    • This game involves picking a category of vocabulary words (e.g. foods). One player will mention the name of a food, such as "arroz," or rice. The next person in line will listen to the word and identify the last letter in the word. He must say "arroz" ends in "zeta" or the letter "z" and then give a word that begins with the letter "z," such as "zanahoria," or carrot. A point is earned for every food the team can name. If a team is unable to name a food, they are stumped and the chain is broken. The team loses a point and the other team can select a new category of words. This game reenforces spelling and vocabulary.

    Jeopardy

    • On a chalkboard or white board, create a chart with five or six categories. Values of 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 pesos can be assigned to each level of question. Sample categories can be: telling time, colors, parts of the body, clothing and sports. For beginning-level students the clues can be given in English, with the answers given in Spanish. For example, a player selects Body Parts for 100 pesos. The question reads, "We see with these." The answer is, "Que son los ojos?" ("What are the eyes?") Keep score for correct answers. The game improves vocabulary, interrogatives and numbers up to 1,000. Other questions can be developed to test for grammar, verb conjugations and cultural knowledge.
