Sports nutrition is an ideal field for those interested in health and athletics. Sports nutritionists can set up consulting services or work within a school structure to improve individual performances.
The American Fitness Professionals and Associates offers a sports nutrition consultant program for those with a high school diploma. Candidates will be required to take an AFPA nutrition certificate course or similar nutrition program as a prerequisite.
Sports nutritionists will learn about the nutrients needed to support muscle growth, the components of a healthy diet and how to help those with food or eating disorders. Sports nutritionists will also gain an understanding of counseling, goal setting and interviewing clients.
After finishing the certificate program, sports nutritionists will be able to find work in academic environments, fitness centers, hospitals or rehab centers. Some graduates may wish to open their own business.
In addition to the AFPA program, the National Strength and Conditioning Association and Eat to Compete offer sports nutrition classes. Research programs to find the best fit for you before you sign up.
