Find a training program. Contact local community colleges and technical schools in your area to learn if they offer dump truck or heavy equipment training. Visit the website of the National Association of Heavy Equipment Training Schools to get a listing of heavy-equipment schools. Call or email the schools on the list to find out when their next course for dump truck drivers is scheduled to begin. Find out what you need to do to enroll in it.
Complete the training program. Attend class as scheduled. Gain knowledge of dump truck operation first in the classroom before obtaining practical experience driving and operating an actual truck. Take courses in how to operate other vehicles on the construction site to expand your skills and make yourself more marketable to future employers.
Obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). States require people to have a CDL if they plan to drive and operate dump trucks on public roadways. Pass the written and driving exam at your department of motor vehicles office, and pass a physical to obtain a medical card. Carry the medical card with you at all times when operating the dump truck.
Apply for operator positions. Use popular job websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster and Craigslist to search for dump truck driver and operator positions. Network with people currently employed in the construction field to learn of unadvertised job openings at local construction companies. Submit your resume and any other documents required to be considered for the job. Answer questions presented in the interview truthfully and follow up on any conditions for employment, such as a drug test.
Perfect your skills on the job. Working as a dump truck operator provides you with more knowledge and experience in driving and maneuvering these vehicles. Don't expect everything in your new job to be perfect just because you attended training. Listen to your supervisor and implement her feedback into your driving to become a better dump truck operator.
