The Aveda Institute is an international program with a hub near Washington, D.C.'s historic area of the Smithsonian and the Mall. The mission of the program is to promote professionalism and teamwork and prepare students by providing client experience. For students pursuing esthiology, the program emphasizes the usage of fragrances of plants and flowers in their skin care training. Classes may be taken during the day or the evening, and the program lasts either six or nine months. Students will also take classes in chemistry, anatomy and physiology, makeup, facial massage, health and hygiene, clinic practices, treatments and personal career development. The Esthetic Institute, located less than 25 minutes outside of Washington, D.C., offers a comprehensive program in Medical Esthetics, as well as programs in Basic Esthetics and Master Esthetics. The Medical Esthetics curriculum presents training in various skin treatment options, including microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, laser anti-aging and light therapies. Students learn medical jargon, as well as the tools used in overall body maintenance. The institute is just less than 20 years old, and offers training for students wishing to be licensed in Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and Maryland. Classes are offered part time or full time, on the last weekend of the month for the program's duration. Upon program completion, job placement assistance is offered. Students interested in pursuing the course must take a skills test before admission. For veterans and/or their spouses, financial assistance is offered through the Department of Veteran Affairs, and the Department of Defense, respectively. Financing, in general, is also available. The course lasts a total of 150 hours.

Avi Career Training is located in Great Falls, Virginia, just 30 minutes outside of Washington, D.C. The center offers training in esthetics and master esthetics. The general esthetics courses include skin care issues and teach students to demonstrate their skills by working on an actual volunteer for six weeks. The master esthetics courses include techniques in glycolic peels, acne and scar treatment, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, the use of various machines used in the field and business aspects of the profession. Those enrolled in the program will be prepared to begin their own practice, as well as work with other medical professionals. Financial aid is available.
