Determine eligibility and suitability. Call Project L.E.A.D. at 305-375-5323. Prospective tutors are expected to complete an application form, either by mail or on the phone, and provide proof of being at least 18 years old. L.E.A.D. requires each tutor to be a high school graduate or hold a GED. Potential tutors must also be fingerprinted for a background check.
Tutors should be willing to commit to at least six months with Project L.E.A.D. Project L.E.A.D.'s brochure states that it needs tutors with "patience, compassion and flexibility." Tutoring sessions take place once or twice a week, for up to 90 minutes per session. Be ready to work with learners at their own pace and use a variety of strategies.
Complete a tutor training program, either from Project L.E.A.D. or certain other literacy organizations. Project L.E.A.D. offers training sessions several times a year, each of which lasts for one eight-hour day. Tutors can skip this by providing proof of certification as a basic tutor from ProLiteracy Worldwide, Laubach Literacy Action or Literacy Volunteers of America.
Get matched with an adult learner. Project L.E.A.D. will match you with an adult who's struggling with reading and writing. The learner will set the goals for his tutelage, which you will help him meet with various techniques and free resources. There is no cost to the learner for any of the training, and you two must agree on a tutoring schedule.
