Purchase French teaching materials if you don't already own them. Buy text books and audio materials that cover beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as a small dry erase board and markers.
Write a catchy advertisement highlighting your qualifications and what makes you different from all of the other French tutors. Include information such as: location where the lessons will take place, teaching style, past French teaching experience, time spent living in French speaking countries and email address.
Decide how much to charge per hour. Check out your competition on the Craigslist and Backpage websites, and compare your qualifications with that of other French tutors to come up with a fair starting price.
Place your advertisement on Craigslist and Backpage. Both of these sites are free and will give you high visibility. Remember to replace your ad as it expires. Use new, attention grabbing subject lines if you aren't getting any responses.
Respond promptly to inquiries. Set up an initial phone assessment to decide when and where you will have your first lesson and to find out the student's motivation for studying French, what level the student is at, and how often the student would like to meet.
Tailor lesson plans to fit the student's individual needs. If the student is going to France on a business trip and needs to learn basic conversational skills for example, plan a beginning level French conversation class.
Meet with the student in a public location such as a coffee shop or a library for your first lesson. Discuss the student's goals, and set up a realistic schedule for future lessons.
