How to Tutor SAT for K-12

Many students are intimidated about taking the SAT. They are either unsure they know the content that will be covered or feel they lack in test-taking skills. These students can benefit from the help of a tutor who can show them who to succeed while taking the SAT. Become a SAT tutor for K-12 students by following the steps below.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the SAT and be placed in the top percentiles of the test. This will prove to your clients that you are knowledgeable about the testing content of the SAT and that you have great test-taking skills.

    • 2

Receive training on the SAT where you will learn test content and the best techniques of teaching that content to your students. The Princeton Review gives this training to potential tutors.

    • 3

Seek out a location where you can hold your tutoring sessions. You can hold these sessions at your home, at the student's home or in another location, such as a library. Make sure that the place is quiet and free from distractions.

    • 4

Decide on your hourly or session rate that you will charge your clients. The rate you choose should be determined based on your experience and the surrounding market demand. If you have an actual teaching degree or many years experience of tutoring, you can charge a higher rate. Tutoring rates can average anywhere from $25 to $75 an hour, depending on your location.

    • 5

Contact the local high schools to let the guidance counselors and AP teachers know that you are offering tutoring sessions for students taking an upcoming SAT.

    • 6

Create fliers and classified ads and place them where parents and potential clients will see them.

    • 7

Become an online SAT tutor either working independently or using the tutoring platforms provided by a tutoring service such as Tutor.com or Brainfuse.
