Oklahoma University Distance Learning

Sometimes jobs, families or illnesses get in the way of finishing school. University of Oklahoma's Outreach program provides distance learning opportunities for nontraditional students who cannot easily take classes on campus. The program offers flexible online courses, televised courses and unique testing options. Based on your schedule and interests, you can choose the area you want to study and type of classes.
  1. Course Types

    • The University of Oklahoma's distance learning program offers about 150 university courses in 40 academic areas. Online and print-based courses are available. Coursework includes chemistry, English, foreign language and philosophy. The semester-length courses are available year-round and allow you to study from anywhere and advance at your own pace. Undergraduate-level telecourses also are available through Oklahoma Education Television Authority (OETA) and Cox Cable Television in Norman.

    Time Frame

    • You have 180 days to complete an OU distance learning course, but there is no limit on how quickly courses may be completed. However, some courses require sequential lesson submission and mandatory instructor feedback, which may delay your progress. Students unable to complete the course within 180 days may apply for a 90-day extension.

    Exams

    • All courses require that students use a proctor during exams. If you live in the Norman area, you can take texts at the Center for Independent and Distance Learning. However, if you live too far from OU, you may contact a local college or university testing center. If necessary, tutors or family members are allowed. Other testing options include College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Advanced Standing exams for students seeking to earn college credit.

    High School

    • The University of Oklahoma Center for Independent and Distance Learning also hosts the OU High School to help teens and adults complete their diplomas. These courses can supplement home schooling or suffice for students unable or unwilling to attend traditional high schools. More than 100 courses are offered. Also, it is possible to take these courses concurrently with college courses to enhance learning.

    Military Programs

    • Distance learning degrees are also available to service members online or through CD-ROM. Students are required to complete some courses on campus, which can be completed anytime during the course of study. Credit for military education and training is also awarded based on ACE Guide recommendations. Degrees include the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies/Administrative Leadership and the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies/Administrative Leadership.
