Adult Vocabulary Games

From enhancing your vocabulary to catching up on things you might not have learned in primary school, learning the definition of words and how they are used help to enhance your overall ability to communicate. One of the best ways to learn new vocabulary is through games, which makes the learning process fun and interesting.
  1. Word Memory

    • Memory games are a fun way for adults to learn new vocabulary words. To play Memory Mix-Up, take 10 words and write down each on a separate index card. Then, list each word's definition on another index card and mix up both sets of cards, but keep the piles separate. Have the student choose a definition from the pile of definition cards and match it with the right word. The student then closes his eyes and the person takes the definition card away from the corresponding word. The person then opens his eyes and identifies the word that corresponds with the definition. Repeat this until each word has been correctly identified and pronounced.

    New Vocab Hangman

    • In most instances, hangman is played using familiar phrases. However, for this version, use a dictionary to identify a new vocabulary word and use it to make a hangman phrase. Try to make the phrase similar to the definition of the word so that the person figuring out the phrase can also learn what the new vocabulary word means at the same time.

    Vocabulary Maze

    • This game is a bit more time-consuming than the other games, however, it is effective and fun at the same time. You need two dice to play. Make a list of two dozen words and create the same cards as you did in the memory mix-up game. Then, make a card or sticker with the words "Start/Finish" on them, according to Adult Education Tutor Support, and others with specific directives, such as "Move forward three spots," "Take another turn," "Lose a turn," "Move back a space" and "Roll again." Mix up the notes and put them into one large shape, after which you roll the dice and move the pieces along the cards or notes, similar to what you would do when playing a board game. If you roll doubles (meaning you get the same number of dots on both dice), you get another turn; if you roll doubles three times in a row, you get moved back to start. When you land on a word, you must say the definition and use it in a sentence. If you cannot identify the word, you have to move back three spots. First person to reach the finish line wins.
