Vocabulary Games for Teachers & Students

Learning and teaching vocabulary can be both educational and fun for teachers and students. As a teacher, you should also look for ways on how to enhance your students' skills and build their confidence without killing them with boredom. A great way to do this is to keep them at their feet with easy to do and enjoyable games.
  1. Word Hunt

    • Word hunt is a classic game which you can convert to an amusing vocabulary activity for your students. You can choose to create a themed word hunt such as a noun or adjective challenge wherein they would have to search for nouns or adjectives hidden in the puzzle. In addition, you can also include a clue that will lead students to specific words that they need to look for such as synonyms, homonyms or antonyms.

    Guessing Game

    • Guessing game is another vocabulary enhancing activity that you can introduce in the class wherein riddles are answered by students. You may group the class into several teams. If no team was able to answer the riddle at the first reading, you can give follow up clues. The riddle and clues usually focus on word definition or meaning, phonetics, pronunciation or syllabication and many more. The team with the most number of correct answers wins the game.

    Word Battle

    • This is a group game with the goal of coming up with as many words as possible falling under the given category. It is best to create categories ahead of time so as to have a seamless activity execution. Each team will be given big-sized paper where they can write their words. For example, your category is "Insects," the team with the most number of insect names on their list with correct spellings gets the point. After several rounds, the team with the highest point will win the game.

    Sentence Construction Race

    • Prepare a list of vocabulary words that you want to put emphasis on. Divide the class into groups; have a member of each team line up facing the board. When everyone's ready, announce one word on your vocabulary list. At the count of three, players of each team will run to the board and construct a sentence using the announced word. The team able to construct the best sentence considering grammar, word usage and spelling gets the point. Repeat the process until every player finishes his turn. The team with the most points wins.
