Can I Become a Biology Teacher in New Jersey With a 2.4 GPA?

New Jersey teacher certification is rigid. The New Jersey Department of Education will not grant a teaching certificate if your baccalaureate GPA is under 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. This is if you graduated before Sept. 1, 2004. If you graduated on or after that date, your GPA must be at least 2.75.
  1. Subject Matter Preparation

    • The New Jersey Department of Education requires that a teaching candidate possess at least 30 hours of education from an accredited four-year college. Teaching courses or pedology courses do not count toward subject matter preparation. Biology subject matter includes anatomy, botany, physiology and zoology.

    Praxis Tests

    • Two Biology Praxis tests must be completed to earn a full license. The scores on these tests may offset the GPA and allow the candidate to gain a license, but only if the GPA is above 2.5 and lower than 2.75.

    Pedology Requirement

    • The New Jersey Department of Education also requires 24 hours of pedology training before a license can be obtained. The 24 hours can be obtained from a state-approved provider or from an accredited university in New Jersey.
