Research the educator preparation programs available. You need to take the correct programs for the subjects and/or grades you plan to teach. The Texas Education Agency: Approved Educator Preparation Programs Web page offers a list of approved statewide programs. Most programs, but not all, take about a year to complete and allow you to teach with full pay while you are preparing for the certification test. Each program comes at a different price.

Determine which certification test you must take for your field. The Educational Testing Service website offers information about what test you will need to prepare for depending on the subjects and grade levels you wish to teach.
