How to Check CPE Credit Hours

CPE, or continuing professional education, is a requirement for certified public accountants, or CPAs. Every CPA must satisfy CPE requirements outlined by the state in which he practices. Some employers pay for the cost of satisfying these CPE requirements, while others will not or cannot. Although the courses that satisfy CPE requirements also vary state to state, many options exist, including online classes and weekend classes. Each class awards 50 minutes of CPE credit per hour, regardless of whether you're physically present or whether you're engaged in self-study as part of an online course.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your state's board of accountancy to learn how many CPE hours you must earn and what courses qualify as acceptable fields of study. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy has contact information (see Resources section).

    • 2

Contact one institution that is on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors (see Resources section), and enroll in the courses from that institution. To best check your hours, it is helpful to do all your coursework through one institution.

    • 3

Ask your learning institution for a "certificate to confirm attendance." This will list your CPE credits. Many states require CPE sponsors to provide or offer this.

    • 4

Keep copies of your course evaluation forms, which provide a second example of which CPE course credits you've completed.
