How to Locate Educational Programs for Inmates

Based on information gathered in 2004, over 90 percent of state prisons, all federal prisons and almost 90 percent of private prisons offer educational programs to prisoners. These programs provide benefits to the prisoners not only while they are in jail, but after they are released. Recidivism rates drop among inmates who participate in the educational system provided while they are incarcerated. The programs offered include the General Education Development (GED) certificate, English as a Second Language, parenting classes and recreation and wellness activities.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete an initial screening process with the Case Management, Medical and Mental Health units upon your arrival to the prison.

    • 2

Attend the Admission and Orientation (A&O) Program. This is the formal orientation to the programs, services, policies and procedures of the facility. Determine the type of education you need after completing the orientation.

    • 3

Participate in the literacy program for a minimum of 240 hours -- or until you obtain the GED, if you haven't earned a high school diploma.

    • 4

Take English as a Second Language for non-English speaking inmates.

    • 5

Contact your local prison facility to determine educational programs that are available in the area. The facility locator tool on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website is an option to find local facility information. (see Resources)
