Did you know that tattoo machines existed in the 1800s? The machine was invented by Thomas Edison, the man who invented the light bulb and over a thousand other devices. The machine was very crude and made solely for engraving on metal and leather. Samuel O'Reilly turned this machine into a tattoo machine with needles and an ink tube reservoir system.
There are two kinds of tattoo machines, the liner and shader. The liner uses finer and a smaller number of needles while the shader, which is for filling up space, uses more needles and of larger gauge. This means that you need to choose the needle gauge well. The needles should also be sterile and made specifically for tattooing. Some use sewing needles, and while it may be effective, it is not recommended. To install a needle in a cosmetic tattoo gun, here are the steps to follow.

1
Check to see if the clear plastic tube is attached to the tattoo gun.
-
2
Use sterile gloves to handle the needle if possible. Take one needle and bend it slightly. Your objective is to create a very small angle so you can grasp it firmly while inserting it.

3
Insert the needle into the guide. As you do so, the needle will start to straighten out on its own. You will notice the tension building as it straightens out. This is a clear sign that the needle has been "captured" safely.

Make sure that the needle is only exposed by a few centimeters. Cover the tip until ready for use.
