Distance learning leaders must face several critical issues when setting up a successful distance learning program. They must consider all aspects of the program, including student use, instructional delivery, hardware and software. Additionally, in a continuing education or higher education setting, accreditation is a necessary consideration to assure the validity of the program.

    • Computers and technology are here to stay. However, not everyone is an expert at using technology and, particular concerns exist when a disparity exists between technology and the technological expertise of those delivering instruction in a distance learning venue. Distance learning allows students and instructors to learn in a cooperative environment, as long as both understand the hardware involved in the learning environment.     • It is important to hold distance learning instructors to the same stringent standards of a face-to-face course. Simply by virtue of the fact that the delivery of instruction is personally disconnected, it is important for distance learning leaders to require all courses to go through the same critical assessment process as all on-campus courses. Leaders must allow students to give feedback at the conclusion of the course. This feedback is necessary for improving course delivery in the future.

    Accreditation

    • For distance learning leaders, depending on the type of student's they wish to reach, accreditation is excessively important. Having distance learning programs validated by respectable accreditation agencies gives the distance learning programs legitimacy. Accreditation ensures that the distance learning institution complies to the strict standards established by the specific accreditation agency and that the distance learning program adheres to acceptable levels of quality in instructional delivery.

    Financial Investment

    • Distance learning leaders must consider barriers caused by virtue of the software being used by students and instructors. Distance learning is expensive to set up. Software licensing is expensive and must be upgraded frequently to assure proper delivery of instruction and materials. Connectivity and telecommunications is also expensive and is an ongoing cost. Students continuously incur technology fees and routine staff development is necessary to assure instructors use software correctly, Also, information technology staff must be trained to maintain software and answer questions related to distance learning delivery.
