In-Service Training in Electrical Engineering

Electrical engineers are involved in the generation, transmission and utilization of electrical power. All 50 states and the District of Washington within the U.S. require professional engineers to receive adequate training and pass certification exams to work as electrical engineers.
  1. Engineer

    • An electrical engineer is involved in the design, development and testing of electrical products and materials, including wiring systems for buildings, aerospace and automobile design. The majority of electrical engineers working in the U.S. attain a bachelors degree in a field related to engineering.

    Training

    • In-service training is usually provided for recently graduated engineers who must spend a certain amount of time working with an experienced qualified engineer in order to become state-certified. Engineering companies often provide classroom- or seminar-based training opportunities for engineers working towards state certification.

    Certification

    • Upon graduation from a two- or four-year course, an electrical engineer can complete the Fundamentals of Engineering exam that begins the process of certification as a professional engineer. State certification requirements vary, with a four-year training and work experience period required before a final certification exam can be taken.
