Colleges That Offer Free GED Classes

Passing the GED (General Education Development) test is the equivalent of earning a high school diploma. Adults who have not graduated high school have the option of earning a traditional high school diploma or taking the GED test. Certain U.S states fund free GED testing and tests are often administered in a college setting. For information regarding GED test centers and fees, see the resource section.
  1. Arkansas

    • Arkansas is one of the few states that does not receive any revenue from GED test-takers. According to the Arkansas Department of Career Education, there are 62 GED testing sites, many of which are located at community colleges. Arkansas residents can search the Arkansas Department of Career Education website for each county's testing centers.

    Oregon

    • Oregon is one of the few U.S states that has a state policy of funding GED testing. The Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development has set up a program that helps residents enroll in the GED. The program helps students access their transcripts and also provides a list of Oregon community colleges where preparation classes are given.

    New York

    • Although New York State law requires a fee for GED tests, free GED-preparation courses are offered at community colleges and public libraries. The City University of New York (CUNY) offers preparation courses at 13 separate campuses across the state.

    California

    • The State of California does not administer free GED testing and the average cost to take the GED exam ranges from $150 to $200. According to the California Department of Education, many of the GED testing centers have free GED preparation courses, but if they don't, staff will be able to make a referral to a center that does.
