Online Continuing Education Courses in Speech-Language Pathology

To stay up-to-date and keep your knowledge of speech language pathology current, continuing education courses are both essential and mandatory. The American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) outlines the continuing education requirements for each state. ASHA defines one continuing education unit (CEU) as 10 hours of contact or clock hours and recognizes half-hour increments as well. ASHA offers continuing education courses and other providers do as well, but be aware that for a continuing education course to be valid on your registry transcript, it must be approved by ASHA.
  1. Identifying ASHA Continuing Education Courses

    • Online continuing education courses are offered directly through the ASHA website, but other providers offer ASHA continuing education courses as well. To ensure that a course offers ASHA continuing education credits, look for the ASHA logo and its promotional statement on the brochure or website of the provider. As of May 2011, more than 550 providers offer ASHA continuing education courses.

    Types of Courses

    • Students can choose from over 28,600 continuing education courses and more than 550 continuing education providers. Courses in language fluency, autism and developmental disorders, speech and voice disorders, multicultural issues, cochlear implants and many other options exist. Speech pathologists in private practice may benefit from courses in ASHA's Reimbursement and Medicare or Service Delivery and Practice Management courses.

    Length of Courses

    • Web-based self study and live web workshops are both generally a minimum of one hour. Online discussions and the completion of several lessons may be required with various continuing education courses. You complete the course by studying and taking a test online. Members of ASHA may take continuing education courses at a slightly lower cost than nonmembers.

    Web-based Study vs. Web Workshops

    • Web workshops commonly feature a presenter who is a Ph.D. level speech pathologist who broadcasts via over the web and is available to answer questions. Students are able to interact with one another through live discussions. Web-based self-study courses do not offer the interaction that web workshops offer and require self-study before taking an exam.
