How to Get Free Training for the Citizen Test

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website (uscis.gov) contains free online materials that you can use to study for the civics and English portions of the naturalization test required for becoming a United States citizen. Study materials are offered in the form of videos, audios, publications and links to other resources. In addition, the website contains links to descriptions of English and citizenship classes, some of which are free.

      Go to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. Click on "The Naturalization Test" under "Citizenship" near the top of the page. The "Naturalization Test" page appears.

      Click on "Study Materials for the Civics Test" in the middle of the "Naturalization Test" page. The "Study Materials for the Civics Test" page appears. Review the items listed under "Videos," "Audio," "Publications" and "Links," decide which items you want to study and make a note of them.

      Click the back arrow to return to the "Naturalization Test" page. Click on "Study Materials for the English Test" in the middle of the Naturalization Test page. The "Study Materials for the English Test" page appears. Review the items listed under "Videos" and "Audios," decide which items you want to study and make a note of them.

    Classes Offered in Your Community

      Go to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. Click on "Citizenship Resource Center" under "Citizenship" near the top of the page. The "Citizenship Resource Center" page appears.

      Click on "Learners" and then select "Find Help in Your Community." The "Find Help in Your Community" page appears. Click on "America's Literacy Directory" under "English and Citizenship Instruction" in the middle of the page. The "America's Literacy Directory" page appears. Fill out the search criteria and select one or all of the following: "Help with reading and writing," "Learning English (as a second language)" and "Citizenship or civics education" and click "Search." A list of classes that match your search criteria appears.

      Click on "Details" next to any class that interests you. Detailed information about the class appears. Review the detailed information to determine if the class is free. Make a note of the class if you decide you want to attend it.

      Return to the "Find Help in Your Community" page. Scroll through the list of states under "USCIS-Funded Service Providers" to see if your state is listed.

      If your state is listed, look at the "English/Citizenship Instruction" column to see if a class is offered near you. If a class is offered near you, click on the link to the organization's website to read a description of the class and learn if it is free. Make a note of the class if you decide you want to attend it.
