How to Find Out Which Courses Will Transfer to College

Sometimes college students want to continue their education at a new college or university, but worry that the credits they have already earned will not transfer. Some high school students take Advanced Placement (AP) or college-level courses before graduation, in the hope they will be able to transfer the credit to the university they attend. It is important to follow some basic steps when trying to figure out which courses will transfer to the college you are interested in.

Plan ahead. If you know you are going to transfer to another college or university or apply to a certain school after graduation from high school, talk with an adviser from that college about transferring credit to that school. You should have a good idea of the school you want to transfer to and the program you are interested in before you start taking courses that you want considered for transfer.

Work hard in any AP classes that you take in high school. Although not all colleges accept AP credits at their institutions, many colleges accept the credit if you score a three or higher on the AP exam. If you score less than three, even if you finish the advanced placement class, many colleges will not allow the class to transfer.

Schedule an appointment with an adviser from the college or university you will be transferring to once you are accepted. Let them know you have taken certain classes at a different college or high school and that you want to learn more about how to transfer credits.

Use your state's resources for transferring credits to public colleges and universities if you are interested in attending a state-funded college. Remember that speaking with an adviser at the school you want to transfer to is the best way to find out exactly which courses will transfer.
