Rush Ideas for Delta Sigma

Making a good impression during rush season is critical to attract the attention of potential members. Plan your recruitment activities well in advance to ensure the events go smoothly, and use these events to help demonstrate positive, one-of-a-kind traits about your sorority. Keep your budget in mind when making decisions about the supplies you'll need, and stick to activities that will provide a comfortable environment in which attendees can easily converse with sorority members.
  1. Craft Night

    • Encourage potential new members to take a study break and head over to your sorority house for a fun-filled night of crafting. Select a craft that will be appealing to college-age women and that will also require supplies that fit your budget. For instance, use inexpensive patterned grosgrain ribbon to create items ranging from headbands to keychains. Pair each potential new member with a small group of sorority sisters to make the craft and get to know one another in the process. Depending on the stipulations of your university's panhellenic council, it may be prohibited for any potential new member to leave the sorority house with the finished craft as it could be considered a gift.

    Game Night

    • A game night is an entertaining, low-pressure way for potential members to get to know your sorority. Set up several game stations around the event space, and then designate sorority members to staff each station for the night. You should start playing the games as a group before the potential new members arrive to cut down on the awkwardness or intimidation factor. Invite the potential new members to join in the games as soon as they've had a moment to collect themselves, and then eventually come together as a large group to play charades or a trivia game.

    Sugar Rush

    • Nothing says college quite like junk food, but Delta Sigma Theta has focused some of its efforts on raising awareness about health by combating obesity, especially in women. Take some time during your event to address the sorority's philanthropic efforts, and then focus on how to enjoy sweets in a healthful manner. Set up a buffet of healthful sweet treats including fruit skewers, trail mix and dark chocolate squares. For your activities, set up several Candy Land board game stations so multiple groups can play at once. Another option for an activity station would be to have the materials to create and decorate gingerbread cookie houses. This would be a good opportunity to discuss Delta Sigma's involvement with Habitat for Humanity. Screen movies such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to play in the background of the action.

    Karaoke Night

    • A karaoke night is an opportunity to show off the silly side of your house and eliminate any feelings of intimidation. Invite the potential new members to your sorority house for a night of cheesy snacks and cheesier singing. To adhere to the cheesy theme, serve fresh a Caprese salad with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and balsamic, as well as a do-it-yourself grilled cheese station, or a simple tray of cheese, crackers and grapes. Don't force the potential new members to get up and sing. Instead, showcase the best and worst talent from your house to demonstrate the laid-back atmosphere of the event.
