The Differences Between Small Colleges & Big Universities

Choosing to go to either a big university or a small college is a process that involves weighing pros and cons. There are advantages and disadvantages for both options, but it's up to the individual student to decide which type of school will make a better fit for him personally.
  1. Expense

    • Expenses may be of little difference between large universities and small colleges, but it depends. Community colleges are almost always less expensive, but some small private universities are just as expensive (if not more so) than state universities. But there are other aspects to think about, like if you're going to a smaller college that doesn't offer on-campus housing, where will you live and how will you get to class? Paying your own rent, food and car costs may be more expensive than room and board at a large college. But financial aid will generally cover more expenses at a small community college.

    Academics

    • Smaller colleges generally offer fewer courses, and therefore fewer academic programs. Large state universities often have multiple degree programs, from bachelor's and master's to doctorates. Most community college offer 2-year associate's degrees, but not much beyond that. There are also less resources in general at smaller colleges: fewer and smaller libraries, fewer professors and school staff, and smaller class sizes. But large universities may be too big for their own good at times, with so many students in one class that a one-on-one relationship with a student and professor may never envelop. However, large universities often employ famous professors who have written books or become renowned in academic circles.

    Campus Life

    • The larger a college campus is, the more student culture there is. More student parties, more university events and more athletics. While smaller schools may also have these events, the funding may not be as large and therefore the event may not be as enjoyable. However, participating in events at small schools quickly builds community among the few there. Small schools may not have as many options as a large school, but if students take advantage of the few events that are available then just as much social interaction could occur in a community college than a state university.
