Class Officer Duties

Most high schools and colleges provide for a student government organization that is composed of officers elected by the student body to represent each class. Student government bodies are typically broken down into junior and senior or upper-class officers. In some schools, junior officers are responsible for fewer duties than upper-class officers. In others, all officers work together to achieve common goals.
  1. Develop Class Goals

    • Develop broad goals and objectives on behalf of the class. Goals and objectives should be determined at the beginning of the school year so that plans can be made for effective implementation throughout the year. Broad goals include hosting a charity event, bringing a new service or organization to campus or planning a class trip.

    Hold Meetings

    • Schedule and hold officer and class meetings throughout the year. Officers should meet biweekly or monthly to discuss their stated goals, create action plans and keep each other up to date on previously delegated duties. Class meetings should be held two or three times throughout the school year to discuss important events and to gather feedback from classmates regarding their needs and expectations.

    Plan Events

    • Plan school-sponsored events such as homecoming parades, dances, proms and assemblies, and other activities such as blood drives and charity collections. Class officers should assemble committees to select venues, promote events, choose themes, set up and decorate.

    Raise Funds

    • Raise funds to pay for events and class activities. Many classes provide their school a “class gift” at the end of the year in the form of equipment that will benefit the campus or a scholarship fund. Officers should host fundraisers and solicit funds from fellow students to acquire the amounts needed for such items. Funds are often used to pay for future class reunions.
