A development officer assists with fundraising efforts and tracks alumni who may wish to contribute to their alma mater. Some development officers work the phones all day, hoping to find alumni willing to pledge small amounts of money to the school. Others are focused on major donors who can provide large gifts of over $50,000. Others work to oversee the creation and implementation of fundraising efforts, ranging from auctions, to mailings, to special events.
Development officers must have effective communication skills (verbal and written), along with public relations abilities. Foreign language skills may be beneficial for soliciting funds from donors who live abroad. A background in management or leadership roles may also help in positions where the applicant would need to direct a team of development officers. Math skills are important, as the position usually requires the creation or research of financial reports.
No specific educational requirements exist, but a degree in any field is usually preferred. A degree in public relations, policy management or business is often beneficial. Applicants with an employment history that includes work in public relations, fundraising or other administrative roles working with donors would be preferred candidates for a college development officer position.
Colleges and universities of all sizes require the services of at least one development officer. Larger universities often have a pool of development officers, with each officer working in a specialized area, such as major donors, mailings or special events planning.
College development officers can move to higher development positions at the school. In addition, they can work for large nonprofit organizations, such as public radio, public television, theatrers, museums or libraries that also rely on donations.
