Ways to Improve Time Management Skills for Students

As a student, incorporating effective time management skills into your daily routine is an essential part of being successful. It is necessary to focus your energy on results rather than on simply keeping busy. With everything you need to accomplish in the course of one semester, it makes sense to manage your time more efficiently so that you can be as effective as you are brilliant.
  1. Avoid Multitasking

    • Turn off your technology for the time being. While much of today's technology allows for added convenience throughout your day, it can create a tremendous distraction. When you're wired into your laptop, your cell phone and your iPod all at the same time, it's tough to concentrate on any one task. The smart thing to do is to switch off those tools that you don't need and focus on the task at hand. Even though you may think you are a multitasking machine, the truth is, with that much going on at once, you aren't as efficient as you could be if you engaged in one task at a time. So avoid checking your Facebook, MySpace and email accounts while you are in class or studying between classes. Wait until you have completed your task, and then, with a sense of accomplishment, you can plug yourself back in.

Schedule Blocks of Time to Study

    • Carve out a block of time in your daily routine to study, and pick some place comfortable and quiet so that you are free of interruption. This is half the battle when it comes to developing good study habits. The other half is maintaining enough self-discipline to make it stick. There's only so much time in the day, so by blocking out enough time to study, you avoid the inevitable stress that occurs when you realize that there's just not enough time to complete your work.

    Prioritize Your Work

    • Keep a running list of your assignments, prioritizing them as you go. Writing them down is a good way to keep them in the forefront of your mind. Depending upon the deadline of each assignment, you may have to reprioritize your list more than once.

    Enjoy Yourself

    • Have fun in the process. Being a student can be demanding and require a lot of commitment on your part. It is also a very special time in your life, and it is meant to be enjoyed. And since time is a very limited commodity, and we can't get it back, it's important that you have fun. So, in the process, take time to appreciate what you are doing. Whether you're writing a paper, cramming for an exam or memorizing the human anatomy, effective time management also means enjoying as much of it as you can.
