Apply through the Housing Office and Residence Life for a position as a Resident Advisor. Check with the Student Employment Office in the Student Financial Aid area for postings.
Enroll as a full-time upperclassman or graduate student at the college or university. Maintain good standing academically with the institution of higher learning. The Resident Advisor has great responsibility and often finds himself in the parental role.
Have excellent time management skills. Demonstrate skills as a good listener, by participating in classes or workshops in interpersonal communications. Take a class in first aid and CPR, as well as a workshop in crisis intervention to strengthen the application.
Present excellent references from on-campus and professional off-campus associates. Have each reference specifically address the candidate's suitability as a resident advisor.
Live on campus year-round while students are in residence in the dormitories. Reduce social life as secondary to the responsibilities of the job. Remain on campus during summers and holidays, as necessary.
Create a positive environment that is conducive to personal growth, academics and respect. Post a 24-hour personal schedule with contact information for floor residents. Be available around the clock for emergencies and crises.
Conduct regular floor meetings for student residents. Prepare meeting agendas, disseminate information, review policies. Monitor and enforce housing rules and regulations. Report to the Resident Director.
