You might be moving into a college that furnishes the dorm rooms with microwaves and a dorm sized refrigerator, but don't count on it. Chances are, you'll have to buy your own. Study your college rule book for what they allow students to have in their dorm rooms and then follow their guidelines to the letter.
Most colleges allow students to cook in a microwave, and to have a dorm room refrigerator, but that might be all you can have. No toaster, no popcorn maker, no coffeemaker, etc.
Get a decent sized dorm refrigerator, they come in a couple of sizes and the slightly larger ones are way better. Buy a small microwave, because you won't have much room in your dorm, but make sure it's big enough for the plates and the bowls you'll need for heating your food in.
Buy yourself a few microwaveable dishes, and the basics for your kitchen. You'll need a good knife, plates, silverware, cereal bowls, glasses, coffee cups, a can opener, and whatever else you think you'll need to set up a kitchen. Since you won't have a stove to cook on, you won't need any pots or pans.
If you can, buy a simple microwave cookbook, so you won't be totally at sea when dinner time rolls around.
For hot drinks, simply fill your coffee cup with water, set it in the microwave, heat for a couple of minutes and add your coffee bag, your tea bag, or cocoa, and your set. (Coffee bags are just like tea bags and perfect for microwaves.)
Water heated in a coffee cup in your microwave also can be poured over cup of noodles, instant potato flakes, top ramen, and other foods like that. Just follow the directions on the packages.
Canned dishes are just as easy. Chili, soup, canned dinners, and canned vegetables are opened with your can opener, dumped into a microwaveable bowl and heated through. Simple. Round out your soups and meals with bread or crackers, or slices of fresh fruit for a complete meal.
If your freezer compartment in your refrigerator is large enough, you can also buy foods like frozen burritos, pizza, and complete frozen dinners. Follow the directions on the package for cooking each one in your microwave. Make sure your food is completely cooked through before eating.
There are all kinds of easy snacks you can make in your microwave, from popcorn to nachos. Your microwave cookbook will have other ideas for you to try too.
