How to Write a Letter Releasing Student Loan Information

When you need to give authorization to a third party to look at your student loan information, or you just need detailed information for your own records, you may have to write a letter to authorize the release of that information. This is sensitive data that can include your social security number, past payment information and agreements that you signed regarding the loan. Keep the letter short, sweet and right to the point.

Instructions

    • 1

Call the lender to ask for the person and department to whom this letter should be addressed. Otherwise your letter could get lost or held up due to rerouting. Get a full address, phone number and a fax number if available.

    • 2

Start off the letter by writing in the current date. As of this date, it will be allowable for the student's loan information to be released.

    • 3

Enter the full address information for the lender on the next few lines, including name, company, department and address.

    • 4

Place the line "Re: Student loan information release" on the next line. This will help the lender to immediately understand what this letter is regarding.

    • 5

Address the student loan information release letter to the appropriate person or department. For example, "Dear Nancy Smith" or "Dear Student Information Department Staff."

    • 6

Write, in clear language, the purpose of this letter. Indicate that you want to release your student loan records and write in the name, address and fax number of the person to whom you want the information released. Explain in detail which records you want released, such as payment details for a certain time period or your loan payoff information. Tell the lender if you want a copy of the records to be sent to you as well.

    • 7

Sign and date the letter. Depending on the lender's policy on releasing this personal information, you may need to have the letter notarized as well to verify that you are the account holder.

    • 8

Write the student name, address, phone and student loan account number or social security number at the bottom of the letter. Include your fax number as well if you want a confirmation fax.
