Innovative Student Transportation Ideas

Students have two strikes against them when it comes to transportation. Strike one: it's costly. Owning and operating a car is often financially beyond their reach. Strike two: logistics. Parking, for instance, can be difficult, even unavailable, to high school and college students. Where there is lack in ease of use, though, students have overcome transportation obstacles with some very innovative ideas.
  1. Rent a Car

    • Rent cars by the hour or day.

Bucknell University created a service to solve the student transportation problem. They set up a program to make rental cars available for student use. Students and faculty at the university are able to rent the cars by the hour or even the whole day for a very reasonable price.

    Rent a Bike

    • Bikes make good time and are easy to park.

Another university, UW-Stout, makes bicycles available to students. They rent them for the entire school year and receive half the money back at year's end when the bike is returned in good condition. Students gain the benefit of easy, cheap, healthy transportation without having to cart the bicycle back home when school is no longer in session.

    Rollerblades

    • Rollerblade places and get exercise, too.

Rollerblading is great exercise, fun and inexpensive. Many students use rollerblades to get to school and other locations. A reminder: if it is not appropriate to wear rollerblades at your destination, bring your shoes with you.

    Limousine

    • Share a limo and save money.

Limousines are best known as transportation for dignitaries, movie stars or the bride and groom. However, it can be very affordable to rent a limo for a few hours or a day when the expense is shared with a number of others. Students can rent a limousine for travel and split it amongst a group of eight for as little as $15.00 per person.

    Skateboard

    • Skateboards are versatile transportation.

Skateboarding has been popular for decades. When thinking of skateboards as transportation, our minds may go to the popular movie series "Back to the Future." In reality, skateboards can be a low-cost, speedy form of transportation for young people that does not require roadways for operation.

    Public Transportation

    • Trolleys are available in some cities.

Public bus systems, trolleys, subways, ferries and trains are all forms of transportation that students might use from time to time. Depending on the locale, each of these may be a method available for students to use to get around.
