How to Write a Dialectic Style Paper

Writing a dialectical essay provides you with a unique opportunity to engage your readership. Because dialectic form responds directly to criticisms internally, you will control and respond directly to criticisms within your paper. If done correctly, this should help prove the soundness of your arguments, and lend to their credibility and persuasiveness.

Instructions

    • 1

Write an introduction, including a thesis statement. Identify what you will be arguing in the introductory paragraph, and include the necessary information to introduce your topic, the controversy, and the position you will be taking (thesis).

    • 2

Support your thesis in the following paragraph. Clearly provide the reasoning behind your argument, as stated in the thesis. Use this portion of the essay to establish your argument, by providing any relevant background information, textual proof or aspects that would strengthen your argument.

    • 3

Present a criticism of the argument that is in direct opposition to your thesis. Don't pull any punches here. Provide the strongest criticism that you are able to for the argument.

    • 4

Refute the arguments against your premise in subsequent paragraphs. Respond to every aspect of the criticism, even those only implied.

    • 5

Draft a conclusion. This should restate your thesis, your argument for the thesis, the possible criticisms and the ultimate conclusion.
