How to Find Out What Parts of the CPT Test You Passed

Some first-time college students are required to take the college placement test (CPT). The CPT is typically taken by first-time students who have not taken the SAT or ACT tests, or took them so long ago their scores are no longer valid. The CPT measures your knowledge of basic college-level math, reading and English skills. Once you take the test you are scored on each section to see if you need to take college preparatory classes or if you can immediately begin take college-level classes.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your college or university testing center and take the CPT exam. Typically, there is no time limit to take the exam but you cannot use notes, books or calculators.

    • 2

Complete your exam and submit your test on the computer. Your scores are immediately calculated. CPT scores are not considered passing or failing grades, rather an indication of whether you need to take remedial courses before college courses.

    • 3

Read your test scores for each section of the CPT. Your scores are given for each individual section of the test; all are on a different scale. You are required to take preparatory classes if you score less than a 72 on the math portion and less than an 83 on the English and reading portions of the test.
