How to Find Out What Parts of the CPT Test You Need to Take

CPT stands for "college placement test." Not all colleges require that you take the CPT and those that do may only require that you take some portions of the test. The CPT consists of four sections: reading, arithmetic, algebra and English. In most cases, the CPT is not used in lieu of the SAT or other standardized tests but, instead, it is used post admission to determine placement in college courses.

Access your college's home page and review what their policy is regarding post admission testing. Some colleges require that all students take placement examinations, whereas others only require students to take them if they lack the high school coursework or have lower scores on their SAT examinations.

Review your scores and high school transcript to determine whether you are required to take any or all of the CPT at your college --- according to the guidelines specified on your college's website.

Contact your college and confirm that you are required to take those parts of the CPT, based on your assessment of your test scores and high school transcript. Make sure you know when and where to go for the test.
