How to Cite Specific Works of Poetry or Short Fiction Using MLA Style

One of the most popular forms of academic citation is MLA style, in which the writer of a research paper uses a parenthetical note to direct the reader to a simple resource reference on a "Works Cited" page. Sometimes you will need to cite small works within a larger work, such as a poem within a volume of poetry. In this instance, it is important to cite the individual work as well as the larger body of reference material.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the name of the poet or author. This should be listed last name, first name and followed by a period. If the poet's name is Rosa Boomly, your citation should start:Boomly, Rosa.

    • 2

Follow with the name of the short work, in quotation marks, followed by the title of the longer document. Each should be followed by a period. The title of the longer work should be in italics. If your word processor cannot support this type of font formatting, use an underscore symbol to indicate an underline. For example, if the short work was a poem called "Lilacs in December" and the longer volume was titled "Flowering Out of Season," your citation should look like this:Boomly, Rosa. "Lilacs in December." _Flowering Out of Season_.

    • 3

Add the city where the book was published, followed by a colon, the name of the publisher and a comma. This information is usually located on the inside cover or the title page. For example, if the book was published by Floral Publications in Boston, your citation should now look like this:Boomly, Rosa. "Lilacs in December." _Flowering Out of Season_. Boston: Floral Publications,

    • 4

List the year of publication, followed by a period. This information is also generally on the title page. If the book was published in 1967, your citation should now look like this:Boomly, Rosa. "Lilacs in December." _Flowering Out of Season_. Boston: Floral Publications, 1967.

    • 5

Finish with the page number or numbers of the shorter work, and a period. If the poem is located on pages 23 to 24, your finished citation should appear in this form:Boomly, Rosa. "Lilacs in December." _Flowering Out of Season_. Boston: Floral Publications, 1967. 23-24.
