The Proper Rules for Formatting a Term Paper

Term-paper writing is all about proper formatting and adhering to strict rules. The MLA guide instructs the writer to adhere to these rules of formatting for a term paper or other research paper. Your instructor or teacher who assigned the paper will let you know whether it needs to be in this MLA style.
  1. Paper Type and Weight

    • Paper should be standard 20-pound, 8 1/2 by 11 inches and white. This is typical copy paper.

    Spacing and Margins

    • Papers should be double spaced. This is for the whole of the paper, including any notations and quotations. Margins need to be set at one inch all around (left and right sides, top and bottom). Indentations for paragraphs should be half-inch.

    Heading the Paper

    • Don't use a title page and on the first page of the paper. Use the following heading; (left side) name, instructor, course name and number, date. Remember to double space between the headings and then center the title of the paper.

    Numbering Pages

    • Page numbers should be in the upper right corner of every page, including the first page, roughly a half-inch from the top of the sheet of paper. The numbers should be listed as "name, page number," for example, "Samuels 1." The page number should always sit one inch from the edge of the page.

    Collating

    • Though you can put the paper in a binder or folder, MLA guide suggests using a paperclip. You also may staple. Either the staples or paperclip should be in the upper left corner of the paper.
