Proper Format for an APA Report

American Psychological Association (APA) Style is a technical writing format used in scientific reports and publications. It provides a set of rules governing the look, layout and content of documentation. Primarily, the social sciences mandate this writing style. University professors commonly require the format and it is mandatory for publication in APA journals.
  1. General Format

    • Use 8.5 inch x 11 inch paper with 1 inch margins. Double-space the entire document. Select a serif font (such as Times New Roman) for the body of the text and a sans serif font (such as Arial) for any figure or table labels. Include a header on each page with the report title and page number.

    Title Page

    • On the document's first page, include the report title, the author's name and the institution affiliated with the report. Center all three items on the page.

    Abstract

    • Begin the next page with the centered heading "Abstract" and follow it with a concise summary of the report. This section should provide an overview of the problem, methods, results, and conclusions. Keep the length of the abstract between 150 and 250 words.

    Main Body

    • The body of the report should contain the following major headings: introduction, method, results, discussion. Provide an overview of the problem in the introduction. In the methods section, highlight the techniques used to perform experimentation in enough detail that a layman could easily repeat the process. In results, provide a detailed description (including graphs and charts if applicable) of the outcome of your experimentation. In the discussion section, comment on the significance of the results and provide recommendations.

    References

    • End the report with a list of all references used to compile the document sorted in alphabetical order by author's last name. The information provided must be complete enough for a reader to locate the primary source used. Additionally, it is necessary to provide in-text citations throughout the main body of the report. When citing or paraphrasing a specific source, provide the author's last name and the year of the publication. If it is a direct quotation, also provide the page number.
