Graduate Studies Course Requirements for Physical Education

Graduate studies in physical education will differ from one university to another; however, many are similar in their required curriculum of courses. To obtain a graduate degree, such as a master's or doctorate in physical education, students are required to obtain certain core courses that provide the foundation of the science of physical education. Other courses will depend on the area of concentration that the student is working toward, which will ultimately depend on career goals. The course credit hours, or how many courses are required for completion, will depend on the college or university.
  1. Core Courses

    • Core courses include research techniques and methods used in education and the ability to teach children in grades K-12 about physical education. This includes the study in the physical ability and development of different age groups and how to adapt physical training to students' abilities. Students in graduate studies learn more about child development and the benefits of physical education, as well as how to apply it. Graduate students learn methods on how to encourage youth to become more involved in their health through physical education such as sports, as well as through nutrition and attitude.

    Health

    • Health education is a form of physical education that focuses on the general well-being of an individual, with a focus on physical education. This is ideal for students wishing to explore the use of health methods such as holistic healing and other alternative health methods. Moreover, there are courses that explore chemical dependency and the use of physical health for rehabilitating an individual both mentally and physically. There are also special courses such as women's health and health perspectives from around the world.

    Psychology

    • Individuals interested in the study of sports psychology and the study of sports may turn to a career in sports psychology and therapy. Common courses that students would take for this area of specialization include leadership in sports education and athletics and the social psychology of sports. Students learn the legal aspects of sports and how to handle substance abuse and drug dependency associated with sports. Most of the courses are geared toward the psychology of sports, how it affects those who have high expectations to live up to in sports, but also how sports can play a positive factor in an individual's life.

    Adapted Physical Education

    • "Adapted physical education" refers to a type of physical education that needs to be adapted to special circumstances or individuals with special needs. This can include courses on how to improve the motor development in individuals, how to introduce individuals with special needs to recreational activities (in terms of what they can physically accomplish) and how to get them to see the benefits of physical education. Courses also establish physical limitations and the psychological and educational implications of various disabilities when planning physical education activities.

    Management and Events

    • Those who want to specialize in athletic administration, such as sports trainers and gym trainers, must fulfill certain mandatory courses. This can include courses such as leadership physical education and athletics. They will also learn the legal aspects involved in providing athletic services to individuals and groups. Students typically study theories in coaching and learn coaching techniques. Other subjects may include outdoor activities, sports marketing, sports relations and sport event management.
