Students applying to Imperial College's graduate division must possess a 2.2 Honors degree, if applying from within the United Kingdom. This degree classification is not used in many other countries, so if applying from another nation, the school offers an equivalency reference for international students. For students applying from the United States, from which Imperial College receives a number of its applicants, a 2.2 Honors degree is equivalent to a bachelor's degree, with an overall grade point average of a least a 3.0 or 3.25 and above. Various programs will require at least this, if not more. Also, for students hoping to study for a research degree, they should also possess a master's degree equal to the requirements above. Students must also meet an English Language Requirement if they obtained bachelor's degrees in countries where it is not the primary language. Students from the U.S., as well as Australia, Canada, Guyana, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the West Indies are exempt. Applications must be submitted with two references, including one from a former instructor.

Also, costs may vary for students who are not from the UK or the European Union. As of May 2010, the graduate programs are just less than 3,400 pounds for UK/EU students, and 18,700 pounds for international. This equals to $27,218 for American students. But some programs, especially those in finance, may range to over 35,000 pounds, or $50,925 for students from the U.S. A minimum of 10 percent of the degree fees must be paid prior to fall, followed by the remainder paid prior to the beginning of the study period. Independent students may disburse their fees in payments, if their session is more than 2,000 pounds, or $2,910 in American dollars.
