Alfred State College was founded in 1908 and is part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. It's a public two- and four-year, nonsectarian college. The Building Trades Department offers four programs that provide associate degrees in occupational studies (AOS): building construction, masonry, air conditioning and heating, and heavy equipment operations. Alfred State prepares students for a career as a carpenter, mason, plumber, heating specialist or air-conditioning specialist. Each year, the building department constructs frame buildings off campus to provide on-the-job experience.
Montgomery College was founded in 1946. Located in Montgomery Park, Maryland, it has other Maryland campuses in Rockville, Germantown and Takoma Park/Silver Spring. It offers two-year associate degrees, including an associate of applied science (AAS) in building trades technology in which students can choose from a carpentry track, electrical wiring track or HVAC track. Classes include intro to the building trades, fundamentals in carpentry, fundamentals in electrical wiring, HVAC systems design, and building trades blueprint read. As of 2011, the student body was nearly 60,000 students.
Established in 1963, Wallace Community College in Selma, Alabama, offers 16 technical programs, including masonry/building trades. The program prepares students for a career as brick masons, block masons and stone masons. Brick and block masons build and repair walls, floors, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys and other structures. The Masonry Building Trade Program is four semesters and features both theory and lab assignments. Students need to complete 56 credits hours to be considered a "completer" and graduate.
Flathead Valley Community College is in northwest Montana, 30 miles from Glacier National Park. It has two campuses: Kalispell and Libby. It offers associate of arts, associate of science and AAS degrees, as well as a certificate of applied science. Its building trades program is offered as a one-year certificate of applied science or two-year AAS program. Courses include building trades field experience, construction project management, math and communications for the trades and oxyacetylene/arc welding. Graduates with certificates can find employment as construction helpers and electrician or plumbing apprentices.
